Experimenting with the Zigzag Principle

The zigzag principle of accordion folding has long been a familiar theme in the world of bookbinding. It has been used in traditional and experimental bindings, artists' books and albums of all kinds since time immemorial. The accordion system brings flexibility and agility, playful as well as creative and respectful solutions to the opening behaviour mechanical functioning of the book.
Innumerable variations of it have been developed by many bookbinders. There are similarities but also interesting differences in these variations. In this course we will look at three basic models - inspired by Hedi Kyle, Edwin Heim and Carine Serex-Chew. We will explore, put into practice and further develop the form, materials, and proportions.
