Two Alternative Books
These are two structures devised and refined by Lori Sauer. Both have multiple applications and unique characteristics:
The Pompidou
This elegant and unusual binding begins with a text-block that includes vellum extensions sewn to the outside sections. These extensions are cut into straps that alternately interweave and fold back on themselves, forming a hollow. The boards can be covered in a variety of ways that reflect the geometry of the structure. The results are a very strong, solid book with many opportunities for the introduction of subtle and imaginative design.
The Strapped-on Case Binding
This structure is made in two parts – a case with a specially made joint and a text sewn to a stub. The parts are secured together with straps that pass through corresponding slots in both pieces. The structure showcases a variety of techniques and can be made with a variety of materials. Some of the features include: a flat or rounded spine, a flat opening, easy access if pages need removal or attention and a case that can be altered or repaired away from the text-block. It’s very conservation friendly.
