Emergency aid for leather bindings

The course will focus on the conservation of traditional leather bindings.
The goal of this course is to develop the daily work in restoration, experimenting with new techniques and the enhancement of conservational aspects. Finding the right technique is an important process and will be worked out step by step. We will work on techniques like rebacking with new leather, the „facing”- technique, reattaching loose book covers or the use and advantage of alternative materials like cloth or others. This course will also address the dyeing and paring of leather and alternative materials, the handling of adhesives and the cleansing and care of leather.
The emphasis is on the practical conservation procedures, testing and interchange about various techniques amongst ourselves. Bring various damaged leather books or works that are still to be realized or stagnate and require inputs.
