The Stretchbook, the Plastic Panel Binding, the Saddler Binding, The Loop, the Limp Binding 3.0

The goal is to make a medieval book in Romanesque style with a clasp. We will split the wooden covers ourselves and plane them by hand to the desired thickness. Using a drawknife, we will trim the book block to its final size - to rediscover real cutting marks as they were 1000 years ago. We'll learn one of the early stitching techniques, create historical capitals, and practice using tools of the time. We follow the technical traces of the medieval bookbinders and work as historically as possible.

This course is all about the “Edelpappband” or the German Paper Case Binding with a continuous end sheet fold (also known in North America as the “millimeter” binding) (max. dimension A6-A7). Case bindings with decorated paper covers are treasured among bibliophiles and are eagerly sought and collec... ted. The instructor will give insight into the rich tradition of this binding style and will show how it can be interpreted in a contemporary context.

Be creative, mix different techniques and think outside of the box! We will use established techniques (such as monotype, paste, spatula and batik) in new and surprising ways to create beautiful and experimental papers. This course will allow participants to create unusual and original work and explore the world of decorated papers.

In this course we will create clever, small-format book structures and special leporellos that stand out from the standard designs. Ten different techniques will be demonstrated and individually executed. At the same time, the course participants will be animated to think about and realize new solutions as well. This course is a stimulus to creativity and at the same time offers a good technical basis for being able to respond to individual customer wishes in everyday work or to realize one's own projects.

This class will help you to carry out an idea, a design or a project, with the support of an experienced teacher. You will profit from learning many tips and tricks specific to your questions and needs. In these three days, participants can choose their own topics and will gain or improve knowledge or finish a project.

Bright colours and delicate shining silk are brought together in an elegant way in this three-piece case binding. Learn this technique that showcases elegant fabrics. In this course we will construct a three-piece case binding with a leather spine. The covering material (silk or paper) really shines through.

There are two main topics and goals for this course:
- The mounting of fabric and silk for use as a covering material.
- Learning of the binding technique and the finishing of one to three case bindings, maximum format A5.

A designer slipcase fits the book perfectly, like a glove fits a hand and protects it completely from dust and light. The tailored rounded spine shape gives the slipcase a nice and snug feel. Participants can choose if they want to apply the opening horizontally, vertically, diagonally or free form.
Please bring along 2 to 3 of your own bound books. Ideal format: maximum A5.
