The German Paper Case Binding

This course is all about the “Edelpappband” or the German paper case binding with a continuous end sheet fold (also known in North America as the “millimeter” binding) (max. dimension A6-A7). Case bindings with decorated paper covers are treasured among bibliophiles and are eagerly sought and collected. The instructor will give insight into the rich tradition of this binding style and will show how it can be interpreted in a contemporary context. Demonstrations will include how to use leather to reinforce the head, tail, corners and/or fore edges of the book.

The Book Art of Collaboration

Just as with any artwork, the book as an object is capable of expression, provided there is a cohesive relationship between book-binder and the book’s contents. This course will focus on the collaboration between each book-binder and the work of author/artist Phil Day. Each collaboration will result in a book that is a unique response to the original lithographs (specifically composed as leaves to be stitched and bound for this course) by Phil Day.
Each participant will own the copy which they have stitched and bound. The book is limited to an edition of 12 copies.

Two Alternative Books

These are two structures devised and refined by Lori Sauer. Both have multiple applications and unique characteristics:

The Pompidou
This elegant and unusual binding begins with a text-block that includes vellum extensions sewn to the outside sections. These extensions are cut into straps that alternately interweave and fold back on themselves, forming a hollow. The boards can be covered in a variety of ways that reflect the geometry of the structure. The results are a very strong, solid book with many opportunities for the introduction of subtle and imaginative design.

Sewn Board Bindings

The Sewn Board Binding is a relatively new binding technique in which the book opens very well, even with a lined spine. The look is contemporary and the book is finished without a visible joint between the cover and text block. This structure gives the book an interesting feel and exceptional flexibility, even with standard thickness boards. We will finish one leather and cloth bound book, completed with a stamped title.

Detection and Treatment of Book Damages

How can I mend a paper tear or loss, how can I repair a partly loose spine, which adhesive do I use and how do I proceed with brittle pages? Working with books is regularly confronting us with all kinds of damage patterns. Some of this damage needs fast and solid treatment to ensure the further use in a library or archive.
