The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the crucial factors that play a role in the proper storage and handling of archival materials and to provide participants with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to carry out basic, simple repairs under conservational aspects. The topics covered will include: climate conditions and their impact, care and handling of objects, preparing exhibitions, proper storage conditions and disaster planning. In addition we will learn how to construct simple protective wrappers.
This course is aimed at librarians, archivists, antiquarian dealers, bibliophilists and collectors, curators, art historians, and others who work with paper artifacts, documents, works of art on paper, etc.

This course presents various techniques and methods used for making simple repairs and restorations for common types of damages often found on books. While doing this we will be paying special attention to the standard conservation practices used by professional restorers. Topics will include: the mending of torn pages, loss repairs, reattachment of loose covers, reinforcement of hinges and joints and other structural repairs. The emphasis will be on practicing Hands-On methods and procedures. Participants are required to bring their own objects to practice on. The goal of this course is to provide participants with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to carry out basic, simple repairs under conservational aspects.

106 Archaeology of Bookbinding - Limp Bindings (Long & Kettle Stitch Bindings)

Limp bindings over a long period of time have not obtained the adequate attention of researchers in bookbinding. This was probably due to the lack of gilding and decoration. If at all, limp bindings were reported as interim bindings. There exists, however, a huge variety of flexible bindings with very interesting features. The course is composed of lectures with double slide projection based on the research of Prof. Janos A. Szirmai and hands-on practical work.
Each participant will do fi ve to six limp vellum bindings with different types of sewing, such as tacketing, long stitch and kettle stitch and with various types of fl aps and closures.
This course is aimed at bookbinders, conservators or others with equivalent knowledge.

In this course we will look at various conservation bindings before intensifying our studies on three main binding types; simple flexible, quarter joint and wooden board conservation bindings (Szirmai). Participants will learn the various techniques used in making these conservation bindings and will complete a model for each type of binding. The practical work will be complemented by theoretical studies in historical binding techniques and the usage of appropriate conservation materials.

This course will enable participants to gain a greater insight into the multiplicity of protective enclosures used for protecting books, manuscripts, seals and other objects. During the practical part of the course the participants will construct various models and leave with a collection of samples.

113 Tips and Tricks for Book and Paper Conservation

Participants will learn and practice numerous useful techniques for book and paper conservation, all of which will involve hands-on practice and are meant for every day work. The book conservation techniques that will be covered include reattaching boards, joint repairs, general tips for binding repairs, primary end band and a baggy-back. Paper conservation tips will include toning of paper, the use of cellulose powder, the use of Gossamer tissue, capillary washing, friction flattening, etc. As time permits many other book and paper conservation tips will be demonstrated. The class is structured to demonstrate and discuss tips and tricks fi rst and then give participants ample time to practice and make their own samples of those tips and tricks shown. After registering for the class, participants will get a list of things to bring and prepare for the workshop.

114 The Use of Bleaching Treatments in Paper Conservation

A variety of different bleaching methods can be used to treat discoloured and stained paper. There are cases where bleaching may be the only way to achieve an acceptable degree of legibility or visibility of an artifact or to restore an artist‘s vision of a work on paper without distraction of disfiguring stains and discolouration. In this workshop conservators will learn a variety of historical and contemporary bleaching methods and their proper uses: light bleaching, hydrogen peroxide, calcium hypochlorite, sodium borohydride and borane tertbutylamine complex. These methods will be reviewed in the context of existing and current conservation theory, ethics and practices. The course will focus on practical applications of different bleaching techniques and other non-bleaching options for stain reduction-both localized and overall treatments. Participants will perform, compare and evaluate the techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring sample materials to practice the various techniques during the workshop sessions. More detailed information on what to bring will be send out after participants enrolled.

This comprehensive intensive study program consisting of three back to back courses, was designed for those persons wanting to complete all the courses in paper conservation within a short period of time. The courses are linked to each other and increase in levels of difficulty. The first two weeks of the course focus on the basics of paper conservation in both theory and in practice. The emphasis will be on practising hands on skills. The third course will deal specifically with the restoration of large-format paper objects and the particular difficulties involved.
It is also possible to attend the courses individually.

 

Paper Conservation 1a – Introductory Course (Course No. 115)

This introductory level course introduces participants to the basics of paper chemistry, paper history and historical papermaking and provides a basis for decision making procedures in the conservation of paper objects. In this course we will cover topics like: preservation issues, damage analyses, treatment proposals and treatment reports, as well as hands on treatment procedures. A wide variety of treatment techniques will be demonstrated by the instructor and practiced by the participants including: Dry cleaning, washing and deacidification, mending tears, infilling of losses, etc.

This course will give special attention to the topics of sizing paper after aqueous treatment, bleaching methods, tape removal and consolidation of water-sensitive media , as well as lining techniques. Emphasis will also be placed on individual problems and questions participants might have. The course is aimed at participants who have completed the introductory level course and gives others the opportunity to intensify and improve upon their hands on skills.

Paper Conservation 2: The conservation and restoration of maps and over sized paper objects (Course No. 117)

Instructor: Cornelia Bandow

Large paper object can be heavy and very difficult to handle due to their various degrees of deterioration and this presents a wide variety of problems for the conservator to overcome. In this course you will be able to profit from the expertise of an instructor with many years of experience in this specialised field of conservation. Course topics will include: The preparation of paste suited for lining large paper objects, closing tears and filling losses, consolidation of water-sensitive inks. Lining and flattening techniques will be emphasised upon, always considering the special situation we encounter with over size objects and particular attention will be given to the specific problems in the treatment of tracing paper. Where possible participants are encouraged to bring their own objects, otherwise we will work on dummies.
This course is aimed at people with previous experience in paper conservation or at participants who have completed the paper conservation introductory courses 1a and 1b

The leather binding with its great diversity of binding techniques and decorations is historically the best known type of bookbinding. Every leather binding shows individual and complex problems which make them so interesting to work on. Practical work will include: Cleaning and consolidation of leather, identifying and dyeing leather, historical sewing and binding techniques as well as other treatments like mending  and stabilizing.

To identify historical paper we will learn how to read certain information. This information will be collected with simple and non destructive tools (transmitted light, raking light, and simple microscopes). Based on the traditional methods of making paper, its raw materials and preparation we will become familiar with the characteristics of paper:
texture, thickness, sound, softness, etc. One day will be devoted to paper making. Participants will have the opportunity to make different paper samples. Another day will focus on the manufacture of different types of Japanese Papers.

122 Proper Handling and Preservation Methods for Books and Archival Materials

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the crucial factors that play a role in the proper storage and handling of archival materials and to provide participants with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to carry out basic, simple repairs under conservational aspects. The topics covered will include: climate conditions and their impact, care and handling of objects, preparing exhibitions, proper storage conditions and disaster planning. In addition we will learn how to construct simple protective wrappers.
This course is aimed at librarians, archivists, antiquarian dealers, bibliophilists and collectors, curators, art historians, and others who work with paper artifacts, documents, works of art on paper, etc.

The course will give an introduction on the history of historical paper bindings as well as the various binding techniques. Emphasis will be on stabilising the soft boards and filling losses on the decorated paper used as cover material while maintaining the unique characteristics of this type of binding.

This introductory level course introduces participants to the basics of paper chemistry, paper history and historical papermaking and provides a basis for decision making procedures in the conservation of paper objects. In this course we will cover topics like: preservation issues, damage analyses, treatment proposals and treatment reports, as well as hands on treatment procedures. A wide variety of treatment techniques will be demonstrated by the instructor and practised by the participants including: Dry cleaning, washing and deacidifiying, mending tears, infilling of losses, etc.

This course provides participants with skills related to resolving this common problem. Participants are encouraged to bring their own objects to practice on. 129 Repairs and Simple Restoration Procedures for Books

While doing this we will be paying special attention to the standard conservation practices used by professional restorers. Topics will include: the mending of torn pages, loss repairs, reattachment of loose covers, reinforcement of hinges and joints and other structural repairs. The emphasis will be on practicing Hands-On methods and procedures. Participants are required to bring their own objects to practice on. The goal of this course is to provide participants with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to carry out basic, simple repairs under conservational aspects.

130 Conservation of Parchment Bindings

Parchment is a very hygroscopic and lively material and requires a very sensitive handling and substantial knowledge for successful conservation treatments. In this course we will look into the history and manufacture of parchment, historical binding techniques, storage and housing conditions for parchment bindings, damage analysis, treatment proposals and documentation reports before starting the practical work which will include: cleaning and humidifying parchment, mending tears and filling losses (also in situ) and the restoration of book covers.
The course is aimed at conservators or others with equivalent knowledge.
Previous experience in working with parchment is required of course participants.
