01 Little effort – great results
This course will take the humdrum out of the usual every day work. With little effort twin-booklet, special leporellos and extraordinary book covers will be realised. Those bindings can be easily integrated into every day work but they will be very different from the norm.

02 Leporellos from A – Z
The leporello, also known as accordion fold or concertina fold, goes back to the 9th century, but has only been called leporello since Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni”. In the course, participants will not only see and produce the conventional version of this timeless book form, but will also implement various sophisticated further developments of the accordion fold, which, in their fi nal form, will merely hint to the leporello. The sky is the limit of imagination!

03 The Springback Binding
This traditional binding technique often used for account and ledger books, got its name from the spine that acts like a spring and creates special properties that cause the book to lie open extremely fl at, making it easy for the user to write in it. Nowadays, where computers have replaced most of our traditional account keeping techniques, the springback binding is hardly used anymore. But, with refi ned improvements the springback binding is an excellent technique for guestbooks and diaries. During the five days participants will finish a half leather springback binding and start a second one.

06 Cloth bindings: Experimenting with Textiles
This class offers particpants a possibility to immerse themselves into the world of textiles. Different types of cloth can be easily changed into something totally new by changing its surface with a very simple treatment. No matter if this treatment is applied to the whole surface or only partially, with this material one can create a completely new look. Learning this surface treatment technique will enable participants to initiate original and creative designs for bookbindings. Participants will also learn how to create colored, graphite and ivory edges, printing of a title as well as a soft slipcase.

09 The printed product and its design
How a product is received by the end customer often depends on the fi rst impression and its appearance. On the basis of examples we will analyse which measures need to be taken to develop a symbiosis between the print and the three-dimensional form. Participants will complete several examples with step-by-step demonstrations by the instructor.

16 A Re-Interpretation of the Binding “de Lyon”
This binding which is inspired by the “Reliure de Lyon” is ideal for the conservation of books: it doesn’t use glue and so doesn’t alter the paper, and the spine of the book is free to open out completely. It permits the use of the original stitching of old books if this is still present. This soft binding gives the artist great liberty as to the materials used (parchment, textile, mill papers etc.). It allows everyone to freely express themselves while using a rigorous technique. The embroidery which ties the book to the cover is simple and easy for everyone.

18 An ingenuous bookbinding technique
The technique shown in the course convinces threefold, namely with regards to technique, function and design. The book covers and the text block can easily be opened and the sewing construction directly or indirectly works as an interesting element of design. This technique has been developed and entitled “CRISS CROSS” by Anne Goy. A course which in an interesting way completes and expands the bookbinding techniques known to a bookbinder.

19 Masterclass with Sün Evrard
Other people’s views, advices, suggestions can be a remarkable tool for progression. As every one of us differs from the others in taste, educational background and experience, a group working together in constant interaction, giving and receiving information, might jump start a different approach, suggest a solution to a diffi cult book, open new ways, boost someone’s creativity. Bring books you have problems with, books you would like to bind but you do not know exactly how, books you love and have some ideas about but no clear solutions for them, books you have to bind but the inspiration is just not there. In relation to the problems of all participants’ books I will improvise explanations, show photographs, suggest solutions, and make the group work as a thinktank. All for one, one for all! Please e-mail me scans, photos, descriptions and wishes well before the course so I can collect out thoughts before we meet. And please note: the technical level does not count in this type of experience: one can make a simple paper binding and still make it expressive and beautiful.

24 Pop-up-Workshop
The goal of this class is to teach participants the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to produce pop-up bindings. After a brief overview of the history, forty different techniques and mechanisms will be discussed and analysed. The main question during this process will be: How to animate a picture. We will look at different ways to use movement, relief, surprising effects and interactive methods to reach this goal. The practical part of the workshop will demonstrate step by step how to create a pop-up binding. Every single step will be discussed and documented in great detail (preparation of the pages, adhering, covering etc), in order to guarantee that every participant has their own reference book to take home.

29 Architectural potential of the book form
If a book houses a text, what are the possibilities of this enclosure? As much as architecture challenges our assumptions about human spaces, when we approach the book as architecture a rich array of possibilities emerges. In this class, we will explore the visual, structural and three-dimensional elements of the book form. Students will design and elaborate books, book-inspired objects and artists’ books with architecture as the guiding concept. Previous bookbinding experience is important for this workshop.
