109 See, determine and produce decorated paper
People who deal with books know the uncertainty: which kind of decorated paper is this? Hand-made or industrial? Sensitive or not?
How can I find out? Where can I get the material from to restore or to make a new cover? Is anybody still making that? If not: what can I do? What possibilities and restrictions are there when I try to solve the problem with the means available in my own workshop?
Which technical, stylistic and financial traps are there to avoid? What if passion grips me during production? What if nothing turns out right?
During the four-day-course, we will look for the answers to these and other questions. In the large practical part of the course, we will mainly deal with paste paper, the kind of paste paper which has also been produced in bookbinder workshops for centuries and which, under certain pre-conditions, requires nothing more than bookbinder tools and materials to achieve excellent results.
Please bring along decorated paper for the determination and restoration exercises.

120 Preventive conservation
This course will provide an in-depth analysis of current theory and practice of preventive conservation. It will look in detail at the basis upon which we make decisions for caring for a wide range of documentary material including modern media. Emphasis will be given to practical sessions highlighted by recent case studies relating to effective and sustainable solutions and how effectively the requirements of collections can be communicated to different interest groups. The course will also focus on recent threats to collections such as climate change and will look at the interpretation of different building structures. The course aims to equip participants with different models of preventive conservation that will enable them to be able to care more economically and effectively for collections and where applicable make appropriate intervenient conservation decisions. 121 Issues in the Restoration of Contemporary Photographs
Seminar Contents / Summary:
New materials and forms of presentation are constantly being introduced in the area of contemporary photography. They are a reflection of the creativity of the artists, but also of the constantly developing technical possibilities. Some finishing processes, for example the mounting of photographs on acrylic and aluminum-polyethylene-composites, or, usually associated with this, laminating, have by now become internationally established. However, the questions of preservation and treatment of these works have still not been answered to our complete satisfaction. Therefore, it is first necessary to acquire a detailed understanding of the used materials and manufacturing processes used in order to then develop methods for their conservation. In this sense, the course cannot offer perfected treatment solutions, but instead will try to convey an awareness of the manifold conservation problems associated with contemporary photography. The topics are first discussed theoretically, then practical restoration exercises on examples will follow. Participants should bring along their own tools.
