03 From the monotype to the book

This course will introduce the participants to the technique of monotype, a printing technique providing numerous interesting possibilities of design. Monotype is an offset printing process, always resulting in a unique example. It requires only a few simple devices. The participants will see different design variations of the monotype. They will get the opportunity to try them and make their own experiments. Together with Edwin Heim, the designed single sheets of paper will then be combined into a sophisticated leporello and the covers covered with original monotypes. To complete the work, we will produce an individually tailored slipcase.

23 Full vellum binding, colored, with pulled through cords and shaped head caps

In five days of concentrated work, you will produce a full vellum binding which will not become warped! The block is sewn to vellum stripes by pulling them through the joint. The book will have an ‚attached’ cover, not a ‘cover binding’. We will color the vellum and stamp the title on the Prägnant (before the block is put into the vellum). The end bands will be embroidered.
The participants work on their own book which they bring along to the course.
The format should be approximately DIN A4 and not thinner than 15 mm.

26 Sewn-Board-Binding Technique

This relatively new technique allows an easy opening of the book despite the fact that the spine is backed up. It has a contemporary look and is produced without a visible joint. By applying a special technique, the entire book remains very flexible despite the covers’ regular thickness. As a result, the book is interesting and pleasant to touch. Another aim of the course is to stamp the titles on the half-leather and vellum bindings with the Prägnant.

27 Classical photo albums in leather

In the age of digital cameras, the printed photo album has become fashionable, but for original photos, a leather-bound photo album is still the most suitable solution. As bookbinders, we have to provide our demanding customers with tailor-made solutions regarding format, size, color and design. This course aims at applying an efficient and material-saving technique, which is extremely durable, even without thread sewing. Leather joints and a suited leather preparation are also part of the program.
